Suggestions for Wednesday Afternoon (June 23) and Saturday (June 26) Tours/Sightseeing in Sydney

To get to the Sydney Downtown area from the Univ. of Sydney campus, the I-CAMP school students can exit the University via the Ross Street Gates – cross  Parramatta Road to the bus stop and board any bus that says “Circular Quay” (CQ). The fare to CQ is $3.30, or a ticket can be pre-purchased at the Footbridge Shop (see Campus map). One at CQ, you will see the various piers where the ferries leave from. Walking to the right of CQ along the waterfront will take you to the Sydney Opera House. You can (almost) walk around the Sydney Opera House. You can go inside but if there are performances on (usually on Wednesday’s) entry is restricted to the foyer area – there isn’t much to see inside. Next to the Sydney Opera House is the Botanical Garden and the Sydney Art Gallery. There is also the State Library in this area which is an interesting building and has special exhibitions. See the  map from the I-CAMP package for the location of these places. Back to CQ/piers, walking to the left along the waterfront will take you past the Museum of Contemporary Arts, Overseas Passenger Terminal (expensive restaurants) and then into “The Rocks” area – birthplace of Sydney - consisting of several streets (main one is Playfair Street) that have significant historical sites & buildings. There are lots of shops selling quality Aussie souvenirs and cafes. Walking on further past this area towards the Harbour Bridge (HB) you will pass several very old pubs where a schooner of beer can be enjoyed. When you reach the HB you Can walk across it (takes 15 – 20 minutes) and alight at Milsons Point which has some nice little restaurants & cafes. You can walk back across the Bridge or catch a train to CQ from Milsons Point station. The students can catch the 4.00 pm ferry to Manly. They will get to see the harbor & pass Sydney heads. Once at Manly, there is a main street (can’t miss it) called “the Corso” which links the Manly pier & Manly beach. Walk down the Corso and have fish & chips on/near the beach (lots of fish & chip shops). You can then catch the ferry back to CQ. This will allow you to see the  harbor at night with all the lights, etc. The other option is the Sydney Hop-on-Hop-off bus. It costs $35 and does a loop of all city major tourist spots including Bondi Beach (operates like other hop-on-hop-off’s in Capital cities). There is a stop at CQ.
